Bank of England today: hold, hike, or another split vote? How are you positioned on sterling?
The Bank of England announces its decision on Thursday 17 September at 12:00 UK time. In July the Monetary Policy Committee held Bank Rate at 3.75% on a 6–3 vote, with three members wanting an increase (preview).
Since then, UK CPI inflation has risen to 3.1% in August, core inflation has held at 2.6%, unemployment is 4.9% (labour market report) and the US Federal Reserve has raised its rates.
Questions for anyone trading GBP/USD, EUR/GBP or GBP/JPY:
- Do you pay more attention to the vote split or to the decision itself?
- Do you trade the release, or wait for the minutes and the governor's comments?
- How do you size a position when a central bank is this divided?
