When the forex market opens and closes

Currencies trade around the clock on weekdays. The week opens at 17:00 New York time on Sunday, as the Sydney session begins, and closes at 17:00 New York time on Friday, at the end of the New York session. Northern summer and winter columns above differ because centres change their clocks on different dates; in the weeks between those dates, the live clock at the top of this page uses each centre's current time.

Which session suits you depends on the pairs you trade and when you can watch the market. The forex market hours guide explains what each session tends to look like, and the economic calendar shows when data is released in your time zone.

Market sessions: common questions

What time does the London session open?

The London session runs from 08:00 to 17:00 London time: 07:00 to 16:00 UTC while the UK is on British Summer Time (late March to late October), and 08:00 to 17:00 UTC for the rest of the year.

What time does the New York session open?

The New York session runs from 08:00 to 17:00 New York time: 12:00 to 21:00 UTC during US daylight saving time (mid-March to early November), and 13:00 to 22:00 UTC for the rest of the year.

When does the forex market open?

Most brokers open trading at 17:00 New York time on Sunday and close it at 17:00 New York time on Friday. That is 21:00 UTC during US daylight saving time and 22:00 UTC the rest of the year. Brokers' own hours and holiday schedules can differ.

Which forex session has the most activity?

Liquidity is usually deepest while London and New York are both open, from 12:00 to 16:00 UTC in the northern summer. Spreads on the major pairs tend to be tightest then, and most US economic data is released at 8:30 a.m. New York time, inside that window.

Why do session times in UTC change during the year?

Session hours follow each centre's local business day, and clocks change on different dates: the US on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November, the UK on the last Sundays of March and October, and New South Wales on the first Sundays of October and April. Japan doesn't change its clocks.
