Destatis published its figures for new orders in German manufacturing for August on 6 October 2026 (press release No. 354). Real new orders fell 10.6% on the month after seasonal and calendar adjustment. The figure is provisional.

Why it matters

Orders are a leading indicator for production. A sharp fall in orders suggests that factories will have less work in the months ahead, even when output is still rising, as it was in August. Orders are also more volatile than output because a single large order, such as for a ship or an aircraft, can change the total.

Destatis's own production figure for August, published a day later, showed output up 2.0%, so orders and production moved in opposite directions this month (German production report). The gap is a reminder that a single month can send mixed signals.

The wider picture

German industrial data this month sit alongside a weak euro area picture: euro area output fell 0.5% in August (report), and euro area exports grew more slowly than imports (report). For the outlook, the ZEW survey and the ECB's September decision are the reference points. Live prices: EUR/USD.

Common questions

How much did German factory orders fall in August 2026?

Destatis reported real new orders in manufacturing down 10.6% on July, seasonally and calendar adjusted, in its provisional figures.

Why do factory orders matter?

They lead production. Falling orders suggest that factories will have less work ahead, although single large orders can distort the monthly figure.

Are German factory orders revised?

Yes. Destatis treats the first estimate as provisional and revises it in later releases.
