Have you ever hedged a forex position, and did it help or cost you?

Hedging means holding a second position to reduce the risk of the first. In forex it can be done with an opposite trade in the same pair, or with a correlated pair. Whether it is allowed depends on the broker, the platform and the jurisdiction, and it adds cost and complexity. MetaTrader 4 vs MetaTrader 5 vs cTrader vs TradingView compares how the main platforms handle position accounting, and some handle opposite positions in ways that change the effect of a hedge.

The question is whether you have hedged, what you were trying to protect, and whether the hedge did what you expected. A hedge reduces risk only if the two legs respond differently to the same event. If they respond the same way, the hedge can add cost without reducing the loss, and a position that looks protected on paper can carry the same risk twice.

We would like to hear your experience:

  • Have you ever hedged a position? What did the hedge cost you?
  • Does your broker and platform allow hedging on the same account?
  • Did a hedge reduce risk, or did it simply move the loss to another trade?
  • What would make you hedge again, and what would stop you?
