Clocks change in Europe on 25 October and in the US on 1 November. How do you handle the weeks the sessions shift?

Forex sessions are defined by local business hours, so their times in UTC move when clocks change. Europe's summer time ends on Sunday 25 October, and US clocks go back on 1 November. For the week in between, the gap between London and New York is four hours instead of five, and the London session closes an hour later in UTC, which lengthens its overlap with New York by an hour. Sydney moved to summer time on 4 October, and Tokyo does not change clocks.

That affects things people often set once and forget: alert times, calendars stored in UTC, scheduled orders, bots, and the hours when you expect the tightest spreads and the busiest overlap. The week of 26 October is also one of the heaviest for scheduled events, with the Fed, the Bank of Canada and the RBNZ deciding on 28 October, the ECB on 29 October and the Bank of Japan on 30 October. The forex market hours guide and the market sessions page show the times in UTC.

We would like members to share how they cope:

  • Do you check your platform's server time and your alerts when the clocks change, or have you been caught out before?
  • Do you keep your calendar in UTC or in local time, and has either caused a missed release?
  • Do you notice a change in liquidity or spreads in the weeks between the two changes?
  • Do you adjust your trading hours or strategy for the mismatched weeks?

Please share your own experience, not calls for others to copy. Posts that promise a direction or sell signals will be removed.

What is the best time to trade forex?

Liquidity is usually highest during the London–New York overlap, roughly 12:00 to 16:00 UTC in the northern summer, when spreads on major pairs tend to be tightest. Whether that suits you depends on the pairs you trade and your strategy.
