Search feedback: did you find what you were looking for?
The search box at the top of every page understands trader shorthand, such as cable for GBP/USD or NFP for payrolls, and suggests related guides and news as you type.
Help us improve it:
- What did you search for, and what did you expect to find?
- Which results were irrelevant, and what was missing?
- Which trading terms or nicknames didn't it recognise?
Your exact search phrases are the most useful thing you can post here. The currency nicknames guide lists many of the nicknames traders use.
Background: Oil and currencies: why crude prices move the Canadian dollar
Crude oil links energy markets to currencies through trade, inflation and interest rates. How that works for the Canadian dollar, and why the link isn't fixed.
Why does oil affect the Canadian dollar?
Crude oil is one of Canada's largest exports. Higher prices increase export earnings and demand for Canadian dollars, and they also affect inflation and interest rate expectations.
Does USD/CAD go down when oil goes up?
Often, because a stronger Canadian dollar pushes USD/CAD lower. But the relationship isn't fixed: interest rates, trade relations and risk sentiment can outweigh oil.

A few tips while we collect feedback, since some features aren't obvious.
- Shorthand works: try cable, fiber, loonie, NFP, XAU or DXY. Search maps them to the pair or topic.
- Search understands meaning as well as words, so "why does the yen rise in a crisis" should find the safe-haven guide even without an exact match.
- Discussions are included, and there are many more of them this week, so a search for a topic such as swap rates shows guides, news and forum threads together.
What helps us most in replies:
- The exact phrase you typed.
- What you expected to see first.
- What you got instead.
If you search for a term that returns nothing useful, post it here too. Those gaps help decide which guides to write next. The currency nicknames guide lists the shorthand search already understands.
