US housing starts fell 5.2% in September. Is housing still a useful signal for the dollar?

The Census Bureau reported that housing starts ran at 1,221,000 in September, down 5.2% on August and 7.4% below September 2025. Building permits were about 1.4 million, roughly flat on August (housing starts report).

Housing is a rate-sensitive sector, so starts are often read as a signal for the economy and for the dollar. The link to currencies is weak in any single month, and starts are volatile, so one fall is a poor guide on its own. Housing starts count the start of construction, so they respond to builders' decisions as well as to demand, while permits give an earlier view of the pipeline.

We would like to hear how you use housing data:

  • Do you use housing starts, permits or existing-home sales as a signal for the dollar?
  • How many months of weakness would you need before you changed your US view?
  • Does a monthly fall in starts ever change your rate expectations?
  • Which housing release do you watch first, and why?

Background: How the 10-year Treasury yield moves forex

Traders say 'watch the 10-year' as if it were obvious — and for the dollar pairs it nearly is. Here is what the yield actually measures, how it reaches currencies, and which pairs track it closest.

Why does the 10-year Treasury yield move currencies?

Because it bundles the market's expectations for the Fed's path, inflation and risk. A policy-driven rise widens the US rate advantage and lifts the dollar; other drivers produce different effects.

Which currency pair tracks the 10-year yield most closely?

USD/JPY — the pair and the 10-year move together so reliably that a divergence between them is a signal in itself. The yen's low yield makes the pair a pure expression of the rate gap.
