New Zealand inflation fell to 3.7%, but petrol kept it high. Does NZD/USD react to quarterly CPI?
Stats NZ reported annual inflation of 3.7% in the year to the September 2026 quarter, down from 4.1% in June. Petrol prices fell over the quarter but remained higher than a year earlier, which kept the annual rate elevated (CPI report).
The Reserve Bank raised its official cash rate to 2.75% in September (report). A fall in the headline rate is easier to read when you know which part drove it. Fuel is volatile and moves with global oil prices, so a fuel-led figure says less about domestic pricing than a core measure does.
We would like to hear how you trade quarterly CPI for the kiwi:
- Do you trade NZD/USD on the headline, or on a core measure?
- How do you separate fuel from underlying inflation when you read the quarter?
- Has a quarterly print ever moved NZD/USD against the price you expected?
- Do you check oil prices before a New Zealand release, and why?
Commodity currencies explained covers how the kiwi and its peers react to commodity prices. NZD/USD has the live price.
