Americans voted in the midterm elections for Congress on Tuesday 3 November 2026. President Donald Trump was not on the ballot. Each state counts and certifies its own results over the following weeks, so the outcome below is a news organisation's projection, not an official count. FTC will update this article with certified totals.

## The projected result (CBS News)

- **House**: at 10:29 p.m. Eastern on 3 November, CBS News projected that Democrats had won enough seats to take control of the House of Representatives, where a majority is 218 of 435 seats. Its latest estimate, at 5:24 p.m. on 5 November, had Democrats on pace for 256 seats. By 7:11 p.m. that day CBS said 43 districts had shifted to Democrats and two to Republicans, with winners in dozens of races not yet projected ([CBS News, House results](https://www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/house-election-results-2026/)). Before the vote, Republicans held 219 seats, including one independent who caucuses with them, and Democrats 214, according to CBS.
- **Senate**: at 11:44 p.m. Eastern on 3 November, CBS News projected that Democrats had won control of the Senate. By 5 November it said Democrats had won enough races to control at least 54 seats, flipping seats in Maine, Iowa, Ohio and North Carolina, with what it called major upsets in Texas, South Carolina and Kansas. Alaska and Mississippi were unresolved, both rated toss-ups ([CBS News, Senate results](https://www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/senate-election-results-2026/)).

Projections are made from partial counts and can change as states finish counting. The new Congress takes office in January 2027.

## The euro against the dollar

The ECB's euro reference rate was $1.1179 on 3 November, $1.1267 on 4 November and $1.1224 on 5 November ([ECB, euro reference rates](https://data-api.ecb.europa.eu/service/data/EXR/D.USD.EUR.SP00.A?startPeriod=2026-10-26&format=csvdata)). A higher rate means a weaker dollar.

## What else moved that week

The election was not the only event. The Bank of England raised its rate on 5 November ([decision](/news/bank-of-england-raises-bank-rate-to-4-percent-november-2026/)), US jobless claims fell to 189,000 ([claims report](/news/us-jobless-claims-189000-week-ended-31-october-2026/)), and Brent crude fell sharply on 2 November ([energy report](/news/middle-east-war-central-banks-flag-energy-prices-november-2026/)). The data show the moves; they don't say how much of each came from the vote. The October jobs report is due today: [US jobs report preview](/news/us-jobs-report-october-2026-preview/).
