# US job openings little changed at 7.5 million in September

The number of job openings in the United States was little changed at 7.5 million in September 2026, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on 3 November 2026 in its Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS). Hires and total separations also changed little, at 5.4 million and 5.3 million ([JOLTS, September 2026](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/archives/jolts_11032026.htm)).

## Details

Job openings rose in state and local government, excluding education (104,000). Hires rose in accommodation and food services (158,000), where quits also rose (197,000). Over the year, quits across all nonfarm employers increased by 375,000. Layoffs and discharges fell in health care and social assistance (70,000).

## Revisions

August job openings were revised up by 111,000 to 7.2 million and hires up by 79,000 to 5.3 million. Quits were revised down by 22,000 to 3.0 million, and layoffs and discharges up by 127,000 to 1.8 million.
