Japan's Statistics Bureau publishes consumer prices for Tokyo's wards for October 2026 on 30 October. The release comes on the day the Bank of Japan's two-day meeting ends, so traders will see it alongside the Bank's decision.

## The last reading

Tokyo's core rate, which excludes fresh food, rose to 2.7% in September from 1.8% in August. The measure excluding fresh food and energy reached 3.0%. The rise was driven by childcare, water and lodging charges ([September report](/news/tokyo-cpi-september-2026-core-2-7-percent/)).

## What to watch

The base effects that lifted the September figure may not repeat in October. If the core rate holds near 2.7%, it will support the Bank's case that inflation is close to its 2% goal; if it falls back sharply, the case for further tightening weakens. The national figure for September is due on 23 October ([preview](/news/japan-national-cpi-september-2026-preview/)).

## Why it matters for USD/JPY

The Bank raised its rate to 1.25% in September, and its board was divided on the pace of further increases ([BoJ report](/news/boj-summary-of-opinions-september-2026-tankan/)). Live prices: [USD/JPY](/markets/usd-jpy/).
