Eurostat's first estimate of euro area trade in goods with the rest of the world, published on 16 October 2026, shows a €16.1 billion deficit in August. That compares with a surplus of €10.7 billion in July and a deficit of €1.7 billion in August 2025.

## The figures

- **Exports**: €227.7 billion, up 9.9% on August 2025 (€207.2 billion)
- **Imports**: €243.8 billion, up 16.7% on August 2025 (€208.9 billion)
- **Balance**: a deficit of €16.1 billion

Eurostat said the decline from a year earlier was driven mainly by machinery and vehicles. Imports grew much faster than exports, so the balance swung sharply.

## Reading it

A swing of this size in a single month is often partly a timing effect, such as the timing of large shipments, and the first estimate is revised. Still, the direction matters for the euro: a goods deficit means the euro area is paying for more imports than it earns from exports, which can weigh on the currency. The first estimate of July was a surplus, so August looks like a sharp reversal rather than a continuing trend.

The trade swing comes as German factory orders fell 10.6% ([report](/news/german-factory-orders-august-2026/)) and euro area output fell 0.5% ([report](/news/euro-area-industrial-production-august-2026/)).
