# What the Binance hack means for crypto and forex traders

> An exchange hack is a reminder that coins held on a platform depend on that platform. What protected Binance users, what a proof of reserves does and doesn't show, and how a forex broker account differs.

The 29 October theft from Binance was a platform failure, not a market event: attackers took tokens from the exchange's own hot wallets. For traders the useful questions are what happens to money held on a platform when something goes wrong, and what can be checked in advance.

## What happened to Binance users

Binance suspended withdrawals after the theft and reopened them in phases from 1 November, while deposits stayed open ([Recovery Update #4](https://www.binance.com/en/support/announcement/detail/73911fb819b240f88b88256bdd318eda)). It says it will cover the losses itself, from its SAFU reserve fund, part of a futures insurance fund and its corporate treasury, and that about 98% had been replaced by 4 November ([Recovery Update #7](https://www.binance.com/en/support/announcement/detail/c6ba9aa726974fc6b9332a2c8f63b405)). The cover came from Binance's own resources.

## What a proof of reserves can and can't tell you

Binance's proof-of-reserves snapshots let each user verify that their balance in the covered tokens is backed at least 1:1 at the moment of the snapshot. That is useful, but it is a point-in-time check of assets against user balances. It does not show the exchange's other liabilities, and it can't show how well wallets are secured.

## Three practical points

- **Withdrawals can stop**: during an incident an exchange may pause withdrawals for days. Money you need soon is exposed to that pause.
- **Use official channels only**: Binance asked users to rely only on its official channels for updates ([Security Incident Update](https://www.binance.com/en/support/announcement/detail/c5a8729a97ac486d963784d96c5642d7)). Incidents bring fake support accounts and "recovery" offers; see [forex scams: warning signs](/news/forex-scams-warning-signs/).
- **Social engineering reaches individuals too**: Binance says the attack began with a fake job interview and a tampered software download ([incident report](https://www.binance.com/en/blog/all/29-october-2026-binance-security-incident-initial-findings-and-response-update-3229153443759566763)).

## How a forex broker account differs

A crypto CFD at a forex broker is a contract with the broker that tracks a coin's price; the trader does not hold the coin, so an exchange's wallet hack does not reach that account directly. The risk moves to the broker instead, which is why its licence and client-money arrangements matter. See [how to check if a forex broker is regulated](/news/how-to-check-if-a-forex-broker-is-regulated/) and the discussion on [client money segregation](/community/client-money-segregation-why-does-it-matter/).

## Common questions

### Is crypto safe on an exchange after the Binance hack?

Coins held on an exchange depend on that exchange's security and on its ability to cover losses. Binance says it is covering this loss from its own funds.

### Does a crypto exchange hack affect crypto CFDs at a forex broker?

Not directly: a CFD is a contract with the broker that tracks the price, and the trader holds no coins. The relevant risk is the broker itself, so check its licence and client-money rules.
