Consumer prices in Australia rose 4.3% in the 12 months to September 2026, up from 4.0% in August, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on 28 October 2026 ([ABS media release: CPI rose 4.3% in the year to September 2026](https://www.abs.gov.au/media-centre/media-releases/cpi-rose-43-year-september-2026)).

## Key figures

- **Annual CPI**: 4.3% in September, from 4.0% in August
- **Monthly CPI**: up 0.8% in September
- **Trimmed mean, annual**: 3.6% in September
- **September quarter**: CPI up 1.3%; trimmed mean up 1.0% on the pre-October 2025 basis
- **Housing**: the largest contributor to annual inflation, up 5.2% over the year

## Reading it

The trimmed mean leaves out the items whose prices move the most in a given month, so it is the ABS's view of underlying inflation. In September, automotive fuel was excluded from the trimmed mean, and the ABS says that was a key driver of the gap between the headline and trimmed mean figures.
